Once again, residents of Brazoria County are encouraged to prepare for potentially extreme heat conditions, which may include excessively high temperatures and elevated humidity levels. The health risks associated with extreme heat, particularly for infants, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory illnesses, are significantly heightened. To address this concern the Brazoria County Library System, in partnership with United Way of Brazoria County and Brazoria County Dream Center have established cooling centers throughout the county.
Beginning now and running through the end of September, the Brazoria County Libraries and the Brazoria County Dream Center will open their doors to provide relief from the scorching heat. The library cooling centers will be accessible to residents when the heat index is forecasted to reach 100 degrees or higher, Monday through Saturday during regularly scheduled hours. The Brazoria County Dream Center will participate again this year as a designated cooling center for Brazoria County, but at a limited capacity due to staffing constraints. They will serve as a cooling and charging site during regular daytime hours, Monday through Thursday, from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM. The Dream Center, located at 794 Brazosport Blvd. S. in Clute, will also continue to provide water and essential survival items to individuals experiencing homelessness and others in need during extreme heat.
These collaborative efforts between United Way of Brazoria County, Brazoria County Library System and Brazoria County Dream Center aim to safeguard the community's well-being during periods of extreme heat. By providing accessible and comfortable cooling centers, Brazoria County is taking proactive measures to mitigate the risks associated with high temperatures.
Businesses, organizations, or individuals who would like to donate cases of bottled water for the cooling centers can drop them off at any of the twelve Brazoria County Libraries, or the Library Administration office at 912 N. Velasco in Angleton.
