History of the Constables
The role of the Constable dates back to 1066 during the Norman Conquest of England, when they were appointed to maintain law and order in local communities. Fast forward to March 5, 1823, when John Tumlinson, the alcalde (mayor) of the Colorado District, appointed Thomas V. Alley as the first Anglo law enforcement officer in what would later become the Republic and State of Texas.
🔹 A Legacy of Service
By 1836, the Republic of Texas Constitution officially established the election of Constables in every county, ensuring peace and justice across the frontier. When Texas became a state, Constables were designated as conservators of the peace, responsible for:
✔️ Suppressing riots and disturbances
✔️ Apprehending offenders
✔️ Executing court orders
✔️ Upholding the law
This long-standing tradition of service and protection continues today, making Constables the oldest law enforcement office in Texas.
⚠️ Honoring Our Fallen Heroes
Texas Constables have always served with honor and bravery, but tragically, 93 to 100 Texas Constables have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
These losses have sadly touched our department as well. With that said, we proudly honor the memory of our Brazoria County Constable Pct. 1's own fallen hero:
🔹 Constable Brad Andrew Briscoe (End of Watch - November 15, 2020)
His service and sacrifice as well as the many others will never be forgotten.
