Our Statement on Automated License Plate Reader Technology

The Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office supports the responsible use of Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) technology as an effective investigative tool that has consistently helped deter and solve crime. When guided by clear, comprehensive policies, ALPRs serve as a force multiplier that enhances our ability to protect the residents and families of Brazoria County.

This technology is not new and has been utilized for many years. Long before the recent scrutiny, the Sheriff’s Office committed to implementing policies, employee training, system access controls, and continuous oversight for all investigative tools. The Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office does not and will not tolerate the misuse of any law enforcement tools.

We have safeguards and accountability measures in place designed to maintain the accountability our community expects and deserves. These include frequent and regular audits aimed at detecting improper queries, strict adherence to state and federal guidelines, and the requirement of a specific and detailed justification for every search.

We firmly believe that using innovative investigative tools responsibly and safeguarding the
constitutional rights of our citizens are principles that are not mutually exclusive; these actually coexist. These measures ensure the tools are used responsibly, transparently, and only for legitimate law enforcement purposes.
